Mumbai Metro Line 5 Begins Trial Runs, Eyes August Launch

Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Line 5 has commenced trial runs between Thane and Bhiwandi, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters in the northeastern suburbs. The elevated corridor stretches 24 km and includes 17 stations, built to alleviate traffic congestion and provide seamless connectivity to industrial hubs. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) confirmed that safety inspections are underway, with the aim of launching commercial operations by August. Trains will operate every five minutes during peak hours and are equipped with automatic signaling systems. The project, though delayed due to land acquisition and COVID-19 disruptions, is a major component of Mumbai’s mass transit expansion. Authorities are also installing solar panels on station rooftops to power lighting and escalators. Residents in areas like Kalher and Kasheli have welcomed the development, hoping it will reduce their daily travel time significantly. The line is expected to serve over 300,000 passengers daily once fully operational.
